Maersk and CMA CGM are once again avoiding the Suez Canal, shortly after they had cautiously resumed using the passage. Due to the recent U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran, risks in the region have increased once more. This primarily affects the Strait of Hormuz as well, where tensions are rising and vessels are being warned of potential danger.

Both shipping lines are opting for the familiar route via the Cape of Good Hope. They emphasize that the safety of crew, vessel, and cargo remains the top priority. As mentioned, these carriers had in recent weeks begun a cautious resumption of sailings through the Suez Canal, after earlier threats in the Red Sea appeared to have temporarily diminished. The new regional escalation now leads them to reverse that decision for the time being.

Although several bulk carriers continue to use the Suez Canal, uncertainty in the area is visibly increasing. In the Persian Gulf, many vessels are at anchor awaiting further developments and warnings from both the United States and Iranian authorities. Maersk and CMA CGM also expect delays on services to the Middle East and have implemented additional measures, including the temporary suspension of certain cargo types.

The situation is developing rapidly, and carriers are continuously monitoring whether a safe return to the Suez route becomes possible again. For now, the impact remains noticeable in transit times and planning for importers and exporters worldwide. Once circumstances improve, the shipping lines expect to reassess their routing options.
